We periodically organise Learning Review events, inviting our international partners to come together to review the UK-PHRST’s work with them, recognising and documenting strengths, analysing challenges and creating recommended ways of working.

Starting with our first ever Learning Review in Cape Town, South Africa in 2022, the UK-PHRST is committed to continued learning and improvement as fundamental parts to our international activities. The Learning Reviews and associated reports help the team collectively address partner identified needs more effectively, based on their recommendations and feedback.

Learning Review 2024: Nairobi, Kenya

In June 2024, the UK-PHRST and its partners held a three-day learning session in Nairobi to review their work over the previous 18 months.

The learning session involved panel and group discussions to capture a rich range of views and practice, as well as Q&A sessions and plenary discussions, with three specific objectives:

  • Review key learning from the last 18 months of UK-PHRST and partners’ collaborative working – to include deployment, research and capacity strengthening and underpinning themes of mental health and partnership.
  • Agree ways of working that build on our good practice, eliminate poor practice and encourage sustainable ways of working.
  • Contribute to shaping the next phase of the UK-PHRST work

50 experts in research, deployment and capacity strengthening attended the event, including:

  • UK-PHRST team members
  • 11 country partners from across South America, Europe and Africa,
  • Director Generals from national public health authorities of four countries (Cabo Verde, Kenya, Somaliland and Zambia)
  • Four regional bodies (Africa CDC, UNICEF, WHO HQ, WHO AFRO, IFRC)
  • UK Department of Health and Social Care (DHSC)
  • UK Foreign Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO)

The sessions held over the course of the three-day workshop produced 20 recommendations for improved ways of working. These are summarised in The UK-PHRST and Partners Learning Review 2024 Report as well as the UK-PHRST Senior Leadership response to 13 of the recommendations which the attendees felt were priority areas.

Listening to our partners

UK-PHRST Director Dr Ed Newman: “These recommendations from our partners at this review will serve as a roadmap for enhancing our work in the future. I would like to extend my heartfelt thanks to all the participants for their engagement. Together, we will continue towards our shared goal of enhancing global health security and outbreak response and making a lasting impact on the communities most affected by infectious disease outbreaks.”
